Developing Apps on Sparkpad

Sparkpad is built on the Linux operating system and can be customized by modifying its top-level user interface layer built on LUA, the powerful scripting language commonly used in interactive games development, and Android. (HTML5 is coming soon. If you would like us to alert you when HTML5 is supported for our devices, please contact us.)

Sparkpad also offers a market-ready display powered by SignChannel, the Web-based digital signage service. For more information, see the Sparkpad SignChannel player.

The Sparkpad software development kit (SDK) includes everything you or your development team will need to get started. (No developers? We can build your app for you. See below.) The kit includes an emulator for Microsoft Windows so developers can even author and test their code directly on a PC without a Sparkpad device, if needed.

To download the SDK, you'll need to create a free account, if you don't already have one. You will find the download link on the My Account page.

The SDK includes:

  • Help documentation
  • Windows PC emulator (for testing)
  • Bundled applications and sample code, including:
    • XML parsing
    • RSS ingestion
    • Image/video streaming
    • Wi-Fi setup
    • Calendar
    • Clock/alarm
    • Image slideshows
    • Video playback
    • Automatic online firmware updates
Documentation included in the SDK will describe how you can best modify the bundled applications and/or create your own. For more information on LUA, including additional documentation, visit the LUA project web site.
